Wenger: Why I don’t spend
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has explained why he keeps his cheque-book closed more often than not. Wenger will depend this season on the continuing development of players like Theo Walcott, Gael Clichy, Johan Djourou and the ageing Cesc Fabregas - now all of 19 years of age - to propel the Gunners towards fresh success. He told Scotland on Sunday: “I have showed faith in our youngsters, who showed a lot of talent last season. “Now if I put someone in ahead of them, it would be like killing them off. Naturally, they will have to fight for their place in the team, but if we took away their chance of playing it would kill all the work we have put in over the past three years. It is a sign of confidence because if I wanted to spend some money - a bit, anyway! - I could.”
